Howey disappointed Newcastle didn’t sign Vestergaard this summer

Former Newcastle United player Steve Howey would have liked Newcastle to sign Jannik Vestergaard.

The 29-year-old signed for Leicester from Southampton for an undisclosed fee, putting pen-to-paper on a contract that will run until 2024.

Vestergaard featured for the Saints on 32 occasions last season, scoring three goals in the Premier League before playing a key role for Denmark as they reached the final four of Euro 2020, featuring in all of their matches.

The Dane made his Leicester City debut as a substitute in the Foxes’ opening Premier League match of the season, a 1-0 victory against Wolves, but missed the match with West Ham due to a knee injury that he picked up in training [Leicester Mercury].

And Howey has admitted that he would have liked Newcastle to go after Vestergaard this summer, exclusively telling Football FanCast: “We talked about Vestergaard, fifteen million, I think he’s a very, very good defender and yes fifteen million’s a lot to pay for someone who’s only got twelve months left but Leicester didn’t think so and Leicester went out and bought him and I think he will be a great acquisition.

“You know players like that, last season at times I thought we defended quite well and other times we didn’t, but obviously we seem to be getting exposed these first two games.”
