David Gilbert, New South Wales’s chief executive, has expressed an interest in signing Heath Streak, the former Zimbabwe Test player. Streak, 30, who’s resignation as captain in April sparked off the current dilemma in Zimbabwe, is due to play for Warwickshire for the remainder of the English County Championship, but, if he doesn’t return to Zimbabwe’s colours, he will be a free agent during the Australian season.”He is certainly somebody we’re very interested in from the point of view that our senior-player influence has been massively eroded in the last couple of months, and more particularly in the last week,” Gilbert said. “We are thin in terms of experience, and Streak, who played 59 Tests for his country, and has captained his country and virtually been a one-man band for all his Test career, is very appealing.”With Steve and Mark Waugh now retired, Michael Bevan heading to Tasmania, and Michael Slater calling it a day, New South Wales are searching for experienced players to replace them. Streak, who made his international debut back in December 1993 and has taken 202 Test wickets, fits the bill.Gilbert added that he had not spoken to Streak, but was waiting to hear back from his agent.
